Royal Caribbean Opens the Door for Emerging Caribbean Artists to Showcase Their Art Aboard Star of the Seas, Celebrating the Region’s Creative Talents and Diverse Culture

Friday, January 17, 2025

Royal Caribbean is set to spotlight the essence of the Caribbean like never before with the return of its “Artist Discovery Program.” The program invites emerging artists from across the region to bring their creative expressions to life aboard Star of the Seas, which will debut in Port Canaveral (Orlando), Florida, in August 2025. The new ship will serve as a vibrant canvas, offering up-and-coming artists a unique opportunity to share the dynamic spirit of the Caribbean with travelers from around the world. Artists are encouraged to submit their works from now until February 15th.

First launched on Icon of the Seas, the program continues to shine a light on rising Caribbean stars, curating a collection of artwork that reflects the rich cultural tapestry of the region. With this initiative, Royal Caribbean honors the people, landscapes, and traditions that make the Caribbean a standout vacation destination, giving local artists a global platform to showcase their talent and ensuring the Caribbean’s essence is celebrated for generations to come.

“We are excited for this next edition of The Artist Discovery Program and can’t wait to be awestruck by visionary artists across the Caribbean. Last year, our first-ever call to artists received an overwhelming response with more than 140 artists across 25 Caribbean countries submitting pieces that told a unique story and captured the allure of the region,” said Jay Schneider, chief product innovation officer, Royal Caribbean International. “Our goal is to connect our guests to the enduring beauty and creativity of the Caribbean, and this immersive program is a pathway to celebrating and exploring local culture while onboard the next Icon of vacations – Star of the Seas.

The Artist Discovery Program is set to commission a new wave of emerging artists to create large-scale murals in four prominent locations aboard Star of the Seas, the newest addition to Royal Caribbean’s fleet. These murals will be strategically placed in high-traffic areas, such as the Royal Promenade—capturing the heartbeat of the ship’s vibrant atmosphere—its embarkation zone, one of the first sights guests will encounter, the Suite Sundeck Lobby, and the Suite Sundeck itself. Each mural will be part of a curated collection that includes artwork inspired by the Caribbean, capturing the region’s lively spirit and culture.

Each selected artist will receive a grant from Royal Caribbean, ranging from $20,000 to over $100,000, to bring their artistic visions to life. As artists in residence, the winners will collaborate with the Royal Caribbean team later this year to produce their masterpieces in Turku, Finland, where Star of the Seas is currently under construction.

Interested artists must submit the following for consideration:

The selected artists for this year’s program will join the distinguished group from 2023, whose murals can be seen throughout Icon of the Seas. Notable artists in residence from last year include Angelika Wallace-Whitfield (The Bahamas), Phillipe Dodard (Haiti), and Jason Hospedales (Trinidad & Tobago). To date, millions of guests aboard Icon of the Seas have experienced these breathtaking works of art, each celebrating the essence of the Caribbean and the beauty of its people.

Building on the groundbreaking vacation experiences introduced by Icon of the Seas, Star of the Seas takes the next step in redefining luxury travel, blending the best of every vacation type into one unforgettable adventure. Whether you’re seeking a beach getaway, a resort escape, or a thrilling theme park experience, Star of the Seas offers something for every type of family and traveler across eight distinct neighborhoods, each a destination in its own right. From the chic new Lincoln Park Supper Club to six record-breaking slides at Category 6, the largest water park at sea, and serene retreats at Chill Island and the opulent four-level Suite Neighborhood, Star of the Seas is designed to create lasting memories for all.

Star of the Seas will embark on year-round, 7-night Eastern and Western Caribbean sailings from Port Canaveral (Orlando). Each voyage will feature a visit to Royal Caribbean’s renowned private island, Perfect Day at CocoCay in The Bahamas, along with stunning destinations like Cozumel, Mexico; Philipsburg, St. Maarten; and Basseterre, St. Kitts and Nevis, offering guests a perfect blend of adventure and relaxation.
